From “Weed” to Wonder: The Many Uses of Dandelion
The Role of Dandelion
Dandelions (Taraxacum officinale)
The dandelion is a hardy perennial plant in the daisy family – Asteraceae.
The dandelion clears the blood of toxins and waste material through strengthening the liver. It has a tonic effect on the blood/lymph systems, helping to detoxify all three (especially the liver & gallbladder).
The Flower: Rich in polyphenols (antioxidant-rich plant compounds). The flower has much more polyphenols than the root. Packed with vitamins A, C & E, which promote healing for topical skin conditions, reducing redness & soothing irritation.
I use the flowers for making my dandelion wine, and I infuse the flowers in jojoba oil for my skin salves.
The Leaf: Dandelion leaves are highly nutritious, rich greens full of vitamins A, C, K and potassium. They are a natural diuretic, supporting healthy kidney & bladder function. The bitters also encourage liver health & cardiovascular health, and may help lower cholesterol.
The Root:
The root contains so many benefits. You should harvest it at the end of summer or beginning of fall—that’s when the nutrients go back down to the root.
Often it is roasted & ground and used as a coffee substitute.
I like to use it for supporting liver health, detoxification of fat stored in the liver, and to soothe gastrointestinal inflammation.
It’s great for eliminating excess fluid in the body (acting as a diuretic) without losing important electrolytes.
It is rich in vitamins K & A.
It really impressed me when I read a study published by the National Institute of Health (NIH) on how it may help protect against skin damage from UVB radiation and increase new skin cell regeneration.
