It’s when all the energy starts going back down to the roots of the plant.
It’s when the cycle of the herbaceous, or the deciduous perennials is finished blooming. They die back beginning in October or the first frost, bringing all the plant's energy back down their roots.
In this blog, you’ll learn about the history and folklore of Comfrey and its many therapeutic actions.
Let’s take a look at what’s in Andrea’s Garden that she digs to make tinctures and other herbal medicines out of.
Today let’s talk about Comfrey, one of my favorites to have in my garden.
Everyone should have this herb on hand in their herbal arsenal.
Latin name: (Symphytum officinale) Symphtum - “means to make grow together”
Family: Borage (Boraginaceae)
This plant is known by many names, Boneset, Knit bone, and slippery root and it does just that, they're many different varieties, so choose the one for your climate and soil.
They grow anywhere and once established and can become very unruly, very hard to get rid of.
Height is from 3-6 feet with long lance-like leaves, that are bristly and hairy. Comfrey has beautiful bell-like flowers which range from dark purple and fad to pink, some even white.
Comfrey contains allantoin, rosmarinic acid, tannins, and a chemical called
*Pyrrolizidine alkaloids*. Known as PAs
For this reason, is why Comfrey has been banned in the US for oral use. It is believed to cause liver damage.
When made into a salve and used externally PAs are not an issue.
Falls, blows, scraps, cuts, wounds, fractures, sprains, muscle aches, back and joint pain, boils, and much more.
These are all part of our daily life experiences, especially here where medical treatment is 35 minutes to an hour away.
Comfrey tea, made from the leaves, roots, and flowers is still being used in the UK and by many healers, for upset stomach, ulcers, heavy menstrual periods, diarrhea, persistent cough, pleurisy, bronchitis, angina are just some of the uses.
As a gargle for gum disease and sore throat.
***Consult a medical professional before using internally***
Applying the large leaves as a compress directly to the skin for sprains, bug bites/stings, bruises, back pain, and burns, but my favorite way to use Comfrey is as a salve Get the salve here: https://www.aromatherachi.com/collections/herbals-teas-tinctures/products/comfrey-root-powder-organic-symphytum-officinale

Shiatsu involves a lot of compressions and for a while, I compensated till the pain got worse. I finally saw a hand surgeon who was sure it was a bulging vein needing surgery and he sent me for a specialized ultrasound. The Ultrasound Dr thought it might be a cyst but still needed surgery to remove it. The surgery was scheduled for mid-March.
I was bummed because I knew I’d be out of work at my practice for a few weeks and limited in what I could demonstrate with my students at the local Massage School where I was teaching a 90 hr. Shiatsu course for up-and-coming LMTs.
Enter Joey Giordano. I was complaining and apologizing to my students about my ensuing limitations when Joey took me aside and said his mom was into herbs (I think he jokingly said she was a witch!) and he’d speak to her. The next day he brought me a jar of dry powdered comfrey root w instructions. Add a little hot water, make a paste, and put it on the growth. I was willing to try anything that would keep me from being out of work for weeks. The paste was sticky like bubblegum and not messy at all. I immediately started seeing results! I would leave the paste on for 45 minutes or so and after seven days the growth was completely gone!! Gone! No pain, no bump. It just disappeared and eight months later it is still gone!
I am so grateful to Joey and his Mom Andrea for showing me the miracle of Comfrey and God's pharmacy all around us in nature! So many of my friends and clients who saw the growth were stunned by the healing!
I’ve wakened to the power of plants to heal us, as have my clients. We all want to learn more. A field trip to visit “A Wonderful Herbal witch!!!” and her Beautiful Medicinal Gardens, located in the mountains of West Fulton, Schoharie County, NY

]]>Yoni steaming is a practice that originated in Africa. It is believed that the steam can help improve a woman's fertility, reduce menstrual pain and aid in the release of toxins from the uterus.
Yoni steaming involves sitting over steam from herbs such as rosemary, wormwood and basil for 15-20 minutes, once or twice a week. The herbs are generally mixed with water in a pot and placed on top of a stove or hot plate so that they release the vapors into the air.
According to Wikipedia:
"Yoni Steaming is an alternative health treatment whereby a woman squats or sits over steaming water containing herbs for example of, rosemary, wormwood, and basil. It has been practiced in Africa (Mozambique, South Africa, Asia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Central America), among the Q'eqchi' people."
Pros & Cons of Yoni Steaming
Pros
Yoni steaming is also known as “v-steaming” or “yoni steaming.” It involves squatting or sitting over a pot of hot, steaming water that is infused with herbs. A blanket is often wrapped around the lower body to prevent the steam from escaping. For the first time keep it to 5-10 minutes, then if you feel comfortable doing the Yoni steam increase it to 15-30 minutes.
The steam only reaches the outer part of your vagina. The steam doesn’t enter your cervix and uterus. Some people believe vaginal steaming offers many health benefits and have called the practice a “facial” for the vagina. Other reasons for steaming the vagina included vaginal tightening or as an overall beauty treatment.
Some of the reported benefits of vaginal steaming include:
Cons
Vaginal steaming has the potential to be dangerous. This is because the skin of your vulva is very delicate and could sustain burns. Exposing your vagina to steam and scented herbs could alter its pH and cause bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections.
Currently, there are no scientific studies that prove these purported benefits. However, some people say it works by enhancing blood flow to the vaginal tissues, which can promote healing.

Skullcap is an herbaceous perennial flowering perennial plant from the mint family, Lamiaceae with ridged leaves and tiny flowers that can range in color from purple and blue to pink and white. The two-lobed flowers resemble the military helmets worn by early European settlers, hence the herb's name. A hardy plant, it grows 1 to 4 feet high, thriving in rich woods and moist thickets or swamplands of eastern North America. Now there are two different types of Skullcap, the American skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) and Chinese skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis), with each treating different conditions.
American Skullcap:
Chinese Skullcap:
PARTS USED
The above ground parts of the plant, dried.
TYPICAL PREPARATIONS
Traditionally taken as a strong tea or tincture; can be used in capsule form. For a mild sedative, combine equal parts skullcap, hops and valerian root. This can be taken as a tea or tincture three times daily and a half hour before retiring for the evening.
FUNCTIONS
Skullcap is a comforting herb; traditionally used to alleviate nervous tension, exhaustion, trouble sleeping, (insomnia), anxiety, stroke, and paralysis caused by stroke (3). It is also used for fever, high cholesterol, “hardening of the arteries” (atherosclerosis), rabies (hence the nick name “Mad Dog”, epilepsy, nervous tension, allergies, skin infections, inflammations and spasms. Today we are going to discuss Skullcap for the use as a Nerve Tonic.
CALMS ANXIETY AS A NERVE TONIC
For more than two centuries, both Americans and Europeans have used American skullcap as a nerve tonic to help treat anxiety. Studies have shown that the plant contains “anxiolytic activity” in animals and humans (5).
Stress affects some brain-related diseases, such as anxiety, Alzheimer’s disease, depression and Parkinson’s disease, yet research indicates that bioactive compounds found in medicinal plants, such as skullcap, may neutralize and even eliminate toxic free radicals (6). When this occurs, stress is greatly reduced. Skullcap may provide significant antioxidant effects, which could make it a great option for reducing anxiety and promote emotional well-being and relaxation during times of occasional distress.
While skullcap may help with anxiety, it also can help those who experience insomnia and other sleeping problems, such as restlessness, muscle tension and clenching the jaws. A skullcap tea or tincture could be useful before bed to help you relax, ward off any anxiety and give you some well-deserved and much-needed sleep.
PRECAUTIONS
Specific: No known precautions.
General: Like all natural remedies, it’s best to take caution and do proper research before taking any herbal remedies. We recommend that you consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner or doctor before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or on any medications.

Valerian has been used to ease insomnia, anxiety, stress, nervous restlessness, headaches and depressing activity in the central nervous system. It has been used since the second century A.D. and became very popular in Europe in the 17th century.
Germany's Commission E approved valerian as an effective mild sedative and the United States Food and Drug Administration listed valerian as "Generally Recognized As Safe" (GRAS).
Scientists aren't sure how valerian works, but they believe it increases the amount of a chemical called gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. GABA helps regulate nerve cells and has a calming effect on anxiety. Drugs such as alprazolam (Xanax) and diazepam (Valium) also work by increasing the amount of GABA in the brain. Researchers think valerian may have a similar, but weaker effect (but just as effective and a natural plant based remedy).
Plant Description
Valerian is a perennial plant that is native to Europe and grows up to 2 feet tall. It is grown to decorate gardens, but also grows wild in damp grasslands. Square straight hollow stems are topped by umbrella-like heads; its dark green leaves are pointed at the tip and hairy underneath. Small, sweet-smelling white, light purple, or pink flowers bloom in June. The root is light grayish brown and has little odor when fresh. It is really easy to grow, a self-sowing perennial.
Valerian is an herb, from which the medicine is made from the root. It is frequently combined with hops, lemon balm, Skullcap, passionflower or other herbs that also cause drowsiness. It is said that valerian also has tonic effects on the heart and is especially recommended in cases of irregular heartbeat caused by anxiety in which effects the heart.
The aroma of dried valerian root is not pleasing to everyone - either you like it or you don’t. It smells like dirty socks. The fresh root is earthy and if you’re making a tea from it mix it with lemon balm (very tasty). Because of the aroma I prefer to make a tincture from the root. This is also very convenient if you wake at night you can just take 1 to 2 tsp. and go back to sleep.
Tincture, what is it and how is it done?
Tinctures are liquid extracts made from herbs that you take orally. They are usually extracted in alcohol, but they can also be extracted in vegetable glycerin or apple cider vinegar (non-alcohol).
In herbal medicine, alcoholic tinctures are made with various alcohols and alcohol concentrations, 80-100 proof being the most common for root tinctures. You can use Vodkas, gins, brandies, and rums. I’m using 100 proof spirits, which is 50% alcohol.
How to make the Herbal Tincture:
** Now as I have stated in my other videos as you are shaking your jar filled with these wonderful gifts from the earth, infuse Happy Qi and healing blessings, thoughts.
Alcohol tinctures last for years. Non-alcohol tinctures 2-3 years
**Most of all remember to label your jar

Essential oil Safety – Robert Tisserand

]]>Distilling fresh leaves, fruits, flowers, and other plant materials produces hydrosols also called hydrolats, distillate waters or floral waters. Hydrosols have similar therapeutic properties to essential oils; but these aromatic waters are much less concentrated. Their aromas are often soft and subtle when compared to their essential oil counterpart. These aromatic products usually have a scent similar to their essential oil, but also can have a greener note. This comes from the water-soluble constituents in the plant material that are not present in the essential oil.
*Please Note: Hydrosols are specifically distilled for the hydrosol. Many people think the aromatic water that comes off the distilling process of essential oils is called a hydrosol. It is not; that is called the by-product of the essential oil. When distilling for hydrosols, you are distilling at a lower temperature, for a longer time, requiring cleanliness and sterilizing protocols. You are also using a pristine water source.
Uses for Peppermint Hydrosol
Peppermint Hydrosol is a go to in a spritzer bottle for cooling down on a hot summer day, or pulling heat from sunburn. It can also be used for the hot flashes of menopause, or if fever is present (neither hydrosols or the essential oil counterpart reduces a fever; it just provides cooling comfort).
Suzanne Catty recommends its internal use in combatting the effects of IBS or Crohn’s Disease. (Please consult her book Hydrosols, The Next Aromatherapy for details on internal use for treating serious medical conditions.)*
You can have hot peppermint tea after dinner as a digestive aid.
Or a nice cool refreshing drink on a hot afternoon.
Storage of your hydrosols:
When not in use, store in a cool dark place. A refrigerator is great!
Sources of Information About hydrosols
This year I have found the mosquitoes to be quite abundant and quite frankly very annoying. I’m one of those people they seem to love.
With that said let’s take a look at what works and what you would like to try naturally. By Naturally I mean plant based, essential oils.
I have tried many things, and each time I see a new recipe with different essential oils, I think to myself “This is it”. Well it’s not quite.
I have tried in many different essential oils at different proportions: Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica), Citronella (Cymbopogon nardus), Eucalyptus Citriodora (Eucalyptus Citriodora), Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens), Lavender (Lavandula x hybrid), Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) - the list can go on, but let’s get down to what I have found what really works, but first let’s see what’s out there so you can decide for yourself.
Synthetics made from plant material
Picaridin: The New Champion?
Created by Bayer in the 1980s, Picaridin (pronounced pih-CARE-a-den) is a synthetic compound developed from a plant extract from the genus Piper, the same plant genus that produces table pepper. Picaridin has been available since 1998 in Europe and Australia—where it is the best-selling insect repellent—but was approved for sale in the United States only in 2005. (You may see it listed as KBR 3023, Bayrepel, or icaridin.) As with DEET, the EPA has concluded that the normal use of Picaridin does not present a health concern.
Studies have shown Picaridin to be as effective as DEET in repelling mosquitoes. Unlike DEET, however, Picaridin is odorless, non-greasy, and does not dissolve plastics or other synthetics.
Permethrin is another up and coming synthetic insecticide and it can only be sprayed on clothing and never on the skin. Permethrin does kill mosquitoes and ticks and is highly effective
(Nepeta cataria)
Plant Material to Essential oil
The ONLY E.O. I have tried with success repelling mosquitoes is Catnip (Nepeta cataria) a member of the same plant family as mint, and nepetalactone is a type of chemical known as a terpene.
Using catnip oil is a good choice because of its many health benefits.
More importantly, catnip oil has been known to help alleviate fever, migraine, dyspepsia, colic, ulcers, spasmodic cholera and nervous system disorders. The oil can help ease muscular, intestinal, respiratory or menstrual cramps.
Catnip, or Nepeta cataria, is a member of the same plant family as mint, and nepetalactone is a type of chemical known as a terpene.
Nepetalactone was first reported in 1941 after it was isolated by steam distillation of catnip.[2] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nepetalactone#cite_note-2Nepetalactone is bicyclic monoterpenoid, i.e., it is a ten-carbon compound derived from isoprene with two fused rings: a cyclopentane and a lactone. It belongs to the class of iridoids. The structure and the effects of the compound are similar to those of valepotriates. A number of isomers of nepetalactone are known.[1]
Catnip Essential oil has a green herbaceous-floral scent and blends well with Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica), Citronella (Cymbopogon nardus), Eucalyptus Citriodora (Eucalyptus Citriodora), Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens), Lavender (Lavandula x hybrid), Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus), May chang (Litsea cubeba).
At first I had a hard time with the aroma of catnip so I mixed it with other E.O.’s that were appealing to me.
SO try this recipe I have made and been using now for some time with success. Also I have found that Catnip hydrosol is wonderful for children. You may need to apply the hydrosols more frequently on your child, but no worries. Hydrosols are a wonderful alternative use and safer than E.O.’s for children.
Bugger Off
Ingredients:
**NOTE** you can use any of your favorite E.O.’s but you must have 20-25 drops of Catnip E.O. in your blend. Sometimes I use Basil, Cedarwood, Rosemary. It’s all up to you. No batch is the same.
In your 2oz. bottle mix your E.O.’s then fill the rest of the bottle with witch hazel and water.
Shake before spraying.
WALLAH! Happy outdoors
Here’s another Great article supporting Catnip.
Catnip Repels Mosquitoes More Effectively Than DEET. Summary: ... CHICAGO, August 27 — Researchers report that nepetalactone, the essential oil in catnip that gives the plant its characteristic odor, is about ten times more effective at repelling mosquitoes than DEET — the compound used in most commercial insect repellents ...Aug 28, 2001 https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2001/08/010828075659.htm

Collecting Dandelions and infusing for this years salves.
Dandelion leaves, flowers, and roots are all edible. They have a bitter flavor that can be minimized by harvesting them in the early spring or late fall. The young leaves are more tender and less bitter, making a great addition to raw salads (I mix the dandalion greens with Arugula). Cooking dandelion cuts the bitter flavor of both the leaves and the roots.
Good Source of Vitamin A.
How to make the Infused Dandelion oil
In the middle of winter when spring is nearing I always get, what I call the “Gardner’s Itch”
It seems every extra moment I have is spent visualizing how and what I will be planting and if any new beds will be set-up for experimenting with this year.
This year I have taken on a REALY large project. I will be starting a brand new garden. How Exciting for me. I have planned many gardens but this one is going to be very special.
This Garden I will call my retirement garden. In a year and a half I will be giving up my day job and taking the knowledge I have accumulated over the years and putting it to work for me. I’m not really retiring but doing what my heart and soul wants to do.
This garden already has 6 fruit trees I planted about three years ago, 2-Honey crisp apple trees, 1- sour cherry tree, 2- Plum, and 1- Pear. Good variety.
The garden are will be planted this year, which I’m doing 2 raised beds because the soil is full of slate and hard packed clay. It would just be easier and I would make my own soil compound.
You may think I’m going to be planting vegetables but no I’m going to be planting what I could distill. Yes distill, making beautiful Aromatic waters called Hydrosols and if I’m lucky to get some wonderful essential oils also.
This list will include a whole bed of different types of Blueberries – “why blueberries,”
FACTS: they are full of Vit. C & K, which is important for strengthening the immune system. Research shows blueberries can reduce the risk of heart attacks and stroke. Blueberries are one of the richest sources of antioxidants and contain the health-promoting phytochemical, anthocyanin. In the winter an elixir can be made, for what ails you, sore throat, couch. The best part is that they can be dried and stored for use in the future.
Sweetgrass: I have a special bond with sweetgrass it just makes my soul dance.
Facts: (USDA NRCS) Hierochloe odorata or Anthoxanthum nitens
Cultural: The cultural uses of sweetgrass include ceremonial incense, perfume, hair wash, bedding, basketry, dermatological aid, cold remedy, cough medicine, eyewash, febrifuge, respiratory aid, analgesic, insecticide, veterinary aid, decoration and adornment. *Native Indian people called this plant the “grass that never dies”. This was because the plant retains its spirit and fragrance even when it is cut.
The list goes on, Calendula, Arnica and comfrey (a healing must for every bodies herbal infusions), plantain, catnip, and cornflower, Lavender, Peppermint and not to mention what’s in the forest, Conifers, Pines and the resins that bleed from them.
A distiller’s paradise, I will also be planting vegetables, but this garden will be for teaching purposes.
All of these wonderful aromas I use in my soaps, you can purchase Gardner’s soap here at AromatheraChi.
I will be starting distilling classes this Fall 2017 so keep checking for updates at AromatheraChi.
I have always wanted to do this and now the time has arrived. So my friends I leave you with this: "Follow the true desires of your heart and all else will follow"

Last night I stayed up to watch a health report. It had to do with soap so it caught my interest.
NEW YORK (FOX 5 NEWS) - Triclosan is found in all kinds of products from toothpaste to deodorant to soap. The industry started using the compound about 40 years ago. But the things we use to get us clean and attractive are also responsible for killing our sex drive.
What Is Triclosan? C12H7Cl3O2The list goes on, it comes down to essential oils high in Geraniol, Linalool, Terpinene and Geranyl acetate, which are both antibacterial and anti-microbial.
How Safe Is Triclosan?
At this time, the FDA doesn’t have evidence that triclosan in OTC consumer antibacterial soaps and body washes provides any benefit over washing with regular soap and water.

Let's talk exfoliation. What exactly is an exfoliant? And how do you choose which one is right for you?
Exfoliation: typically deals with the epidermis, the process of removing the older, dead skin cells from the top layer of skin. It takes from 14 to 28 days for new skin to reach the surface, where they die and shed from the skin, to be replaced by newer cells that rise to the surface. Most of the visible skin is composed of dead cells, which are tough and help protect you. Newer skin cells that replace the old skin as they shed off the surface, keeping the skin tone even and healthy, quickly and constantly replace this skin.
The history of exfoliation can be traced back to the Ancient Egyptians, when abrasive minerals and alabaster particles were used for this purpose; they obviously understood the difference a good scrub could make to their tired, overworked and sun exposed skin.
Since then a variety of substances have been used to peel, exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin - including natural acids, mineral fragments, plants and direct irritants to stimulate the natural shedding' process.
Some of the potential benefits of exfoliation include:How often should I exfoliate?
Remember that the goal of exfoliation is simply to remove the oldest dead layer of the skin from the surface.
Once a week is plenty.
DIY (Do it Yourself)
Homemade exfoliators are some of the best in the world!
Not only are they all natural, but homemade exfoliators also ensure that your skin stays soft all of the time!Whether you are just trying to get rid of some breakouts you might be having or you're trying to prevent the breakouts, homemade exfoliators can help!
Today we rely heavily on ingredients that include sea salt, sugar, oats, fruit kernels and gentle exfoliating particles, but why do we need to ensure we're regularly buffing, scrubbing and exfoliating our skin?
Here are some of the ingredience that I love for exfoliating.
BAKING SODABaking soda is my personal favorite. I exfoliate my face with baking soda daily. I keep a container in my shower and rub about a tablespoon of it on my face in a circular motion, rinse, and then wash my face with one of AromatheraChi wonderful moisturizing soaps. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is the main ingredient in many expensive exfoliation products.
SUGARSugar is a natural source of glycolic acid. Glycolic acid boosts new cell production and breaks down the protein that keeps the dead cells hanging onto your skin. Pure can sugar crystals work best. Mix the sugar crystals with your favorite massage oil (olive, Jojoba, grapeseed, almond etc.) to make a paste. Scrub on your face in a circular motion, rinse, and wash as usual.
SEA SALTSea salt, Himalayan Pink salts are full of trace minerals that rejuvenate your skin, stimulate cell growth, and help your skin retail moisture. A salt scrub is great for dry skin. Mix with Rose Geranium; Frankincense, or lavender essential oil and/or your favorite massage oil (olive, Jojoba, grapeseed, almond , etc.) to make a paste. Scrub on your face in a circular motion, rinse, and wash as usual.
OATMEALOatmeal is a very gentle exfoliant, so it’s perfect for sensitive skin. It is a natural anti-inflammatory and is very moisturizing. Mix finely ground oatmeal with honey and/or kefir (you can also use yogurt or buttermilk). Scrub on your face in a circular motion, let sit for 15-30 minutes, rinse, and wash as usual.
KEFIRApply to your face and let sit for 15-30 minutes, rinse, and wash as usual. Your skin will be so soft and smooth for several days.
HONEYRaw honey is anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal. It kills skin infections, including acne. Honey reduces inflammation and hydrates. Honey can be mixed with any of the other exfoliates mentioned here to boost the antioxidant and anti-bacterial benefits.
CoffeeCoffee grounds are a natural exfoliant; sloughing away dead skin cells and leaving the skin feel refreshed. Or, use leftover grounds from the morning's cup. Coffee grounds soften the skin.
Bentonite is one of most popular clays and comes from naturally occurring volcanic ash sediments here in the United States. Bentonite clay has been traditionally used to assist in mineral deficiencies, and to help bind toxins making them more soluble.
French Green clay has enormous absorbent powers due to the constitution of its micro molecules. It literally “drinks” oils, toxic substances, and impurities from your skin. Its toning action stimulates the skin. French Green clay is great for helping to clear occasional skin blemishes
Fuller’s Earth clay is sedimentary clay that has been widely used as a skin-lightening agent and is best known for its ability to be applied as a “facial bleach.” Because of its enormous drawing capabilities, Fuller’s Earth is the number one choice for oily.
Rhassoul Clay truly exquisite spa quality clay from ancient deposits unearthed from the fertile Atlas Mountains in Morocco. This mineral rich clay blends extremely well with water making its application to the face and skin a smooth and delightful experience.
White Kaolin clay the most versatile and easily applied clay that is commonly found in standard skincare preparations and cosmetics. White Cosmetic clay, also known as White Kaolin clay, is very fine and light clay that has natural absorbency properties.
My Choice of the top oils to use in your scrubs:Please note try to buy Organic oils if you can
Coconut oil has been used for centuries by Pacific Islanders; it is renowned as a good skin tonic.
Argan Oil, Native to Morocco and used there for generations, Argan oil is so healing because it’s rich in vitamin A and vitamin E, various antioxidants, omega-6 fatty acids and linoleic acid. Argan is not only great for gently moisturizing, leaving skin feeling and looking youthful.
Jojoba Oil, one of the most widely used carrier oils, jojoba oil is extremely moisturizing and can help heal burns, sores, scars, dermatitis, acne psoriasis and wrinkles. Native to the southern U.S and Mexico, this oil has been used to treat acne, psoriasis, sunburn and chapped skin for generations.
Almond Oil, You probably already know about the many nutrition benefits of almonds, but maybe you’re new to using almond oil on your skin. Almond oil not only smells great, but it has anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, and antiseptic properties. It makes a great carrier oil for essential oils to naturally treat skin rashes, acne or dryness. It also blends easily with many different smells, so try in it homemade washes, masks or lotions.
Avocado, An ultra-moisturizing fatty fruit, the benefits of avocados include containing vitamins A, D and E that are able to penetrate the skin. It helps soothe sunburned skin, can boost collagen production and treat age spots. It also works to reduce inflammation of the skin when applies topically and can do the same internally when eaten.
Shea Butter, Shea butter has been used as a natural skin care product in Africa for hundreds of years, where it is still largely cultivated and shipped around the world today. It makes an excellent moisturizing option for dry skin types and is inexpensive yet effective at reducing flaking, redness or peeling.
Castor Oil, used to cleanse skin, castor oil is actually a “drying oil,” even though that might seem counterintuitive. For facial cleansing, you only need to use a very small amount, about a teaspoon of castor oil, mixed into in 1/4 cup of another oil like coconut or almond. Rub into your face and massage, and then rinse with warm water to carry away impurities. It is also a wonderful humectant for your skin.
Carrot seed essential oil has a rejuvenating effect on the skin. It not only works to help smooth skin, but assists with cell regeneration. For this reason, it can help to fade scars and improve the tone of aging skin. It’s also rich in antioxidants, helping to neutralize inflammation and wrinkle causing free radicals.
My Choice of Essential oils to use in your masks
Frankincense essential oil is fantastic for all skin types. It has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits to the skin, making it great for acne-prone skin. It is also a natural toner, decreasing the appearance of pores and evening skin-tone. It encourages new cell growth, helping to tighten skin and reduce wrinkles and the appearance of scars. It also helps soothe chapped, dry skin.
Geranium essential oil helps regulate oil production and reduces acne breakouts. It also helps improve skin elasticity and tighten skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. It also promotes blood circulation to the areas where it is applied, helping to heal bruises, broken capillaries, burns, cuts, dermatitis, eczema, ringworm, and other skin conditions
Lavender essential oil is one I suggest no one goes without — it smells amazing, helps you relax and your body adapt to stress, and has great benefits for the skin. It helps regenerate skin cells so are great for mature skin, sunspots, and scarring. Another great oil for all skin types and needs.
Myrrh essential oil greatly benefits aging skin. It has strong anti-inflammatory properties that help improve skin tone, firmness, and skin elasticity, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Myrrh can also help heal sun damage, chapped skin, rashes, and eczema.
Patchouli essential oil is particularly great for aging skin. It promotes new cell growth and smooth’s the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Because it also has antiseptic, antifungal, and antibacterial properties, it can also benefit skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, and acne.
Rose essential oil is especially great for dry or aging skin. Researchers have found that it contains several therapeutic compounds known to promote healing, especially antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory compounds. As a result, rose essential oil helps refine skin texture and tone, and can be helpful with managing skin conditions such as psoriasis and dermatitis.
Apple Cider VinegarIt also contains highly beneficial acetic acid and certain vitamins like potassium and magnesium that make it a detoxifying agent when consumed internally, since it boosts liver function and helps balance bacteria in the gut.
Aloe VeraMost people associate aloe vera benefits with healing sunburns, but did you know that aloe also contains bacteria-fighting, soothing ingredients that fight inflammation, redness and itching? For hundreds of years aloe has been used to treat skin diseases, infections and as a natural treatment for fungal diseases in traditional Chinese medicine.

The exact origins of the New Year celebration in China are unclear. It is said to have begun from the year-end religious ceremony during the Shang Dynasty (1766 BC - 1122 BC). A few believe that it started as early as Emperors Yao and Shun (~2300 BC). At the beginning, the date of celebration varied from mid-winter to early spring. With the maturity of the solar base calendar, Emperor Wu (157 BC - 87 BC) of the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220), established the first day of the first month as the beginning of the year, where it remains. The following is a brief list:
According to tales and legends, the beginning of Chinese New Year started with the fight against a mythical beast called the Year. The Year looks like an ox with a lions head and inhabits the sea. On the night of New Year's Eve, the Year will come out to harm people, animals and properties. Later, people learned that the Year fears the color red, fire and loud sounds. For self-protection, people began posting red Dui Lian in front of their homes, launched fireworks and hung lanterns at the years end.
A few days before the Chinese New Year, people will do a complete cleaning of the house and house wares. This signifies the removal of the old and the welcoming of the new. When bathing did not occur often, people would take one to welcome the New Year. A great natural cleaning solution can be made from Vinegar, Lemon Essential Oil andMay Chang Essential Oil. One of the following can be added to give your blend a woodsy aroma: Siberian fir, Cedarwood or Black spruce. Any variation of these blends will make your home smell inviting for the New Year.
Opening all the windows and doors in all parts of the home is said to bring in clean and (new) good luck for the year.
Switch on all of the lights in the home inside and out as this is said to attract good luck from outside and if the windows and doors are wide open it is easy for the luck to enter. The bright lights and open windows are also used to scare away evil spirits.
It is said that buying a new pair of slippers for New Year will stop people from gossiping about you. In China, face and reputation are very important.
After the cleaning, people will decorate the house to welcome the New Year. Most of the decorations are red in color. The most popular New Year decorations are upside down, such as Fu dui lian, lanterns, year paint, paper cutting and door gods.
The most popular of the Chinese New Year crafts would be the upside down character of "Fu". "Fu" in Chinese means luck, happiness, and prosperity. When it is upside down, it means "coming". This craft means that luck, happiness, and prosperity is immediately in our future. Usually the "Fu" is written on a diamond shaped paper with a red background. People normally post the "Fu" on their front doors or on living room walls.
The Red Packet is a red envelope that contains money. The amount can range from one to a few thousand Chinese Yuan. Red packets are usually given by adults (especially married couples) and the elderly to young children (in the New Year days.) It is believed that the money in the red packet will suppress evil from the children, keep them healthy and give them a long life.
The Dragon
The dragon is a very popular symbol for the Chinese New Year. It is a symbol of strength and good luck. A Chinese New Year celebration would not be complete without a giant dragon parading down the street. The dragon costume is always very colorful and can be up to 100 feet long. People inside the costume make the dragon move up and down as it zigzags past the spectators.
One of my favorite customs of the Chinese New Year is the setting up of an altar. Altars are usually adorned with lucky foods and photos honoring deceased ancestors.
The most common Chinese New Year foods include dumplings, fish, spring rolls and niangao. Each of these foods has a special meaning:
The Chinese associate gifts of oranges and tangerines as having an abundance of happiness and prosperity. The bright orange color of the fruits also symbolizes ‘gold’ therefore, it has an auspicious meaning to bring in good luck and wealth.
Displaying and eating these fruits is said to bring wealth and luck. According to the Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco, the tradition stems from the way the Chinese words for gold and orange sound alike, while the word for tangerine echoes luck. The Chinese tradition Lum symbolizes good luck. When it comes to oranges and tangerines, Lum states that leaves are good because leaves symbolize longevity.
Chinese New Year is very much a family event where the social side of things is concerned. It is a time of reunion and thanksgiving. The Chinese believe that as they enter a new year, they should start a new beginning.
In a Rooster Year, all of the Chinese animals can reap great rewards by tapping into Rooster traits. Loyalty, commitment, hard work, family values, and top-notch appearances are just some of the characteristics that will be rewarded this year.

What are Bath Bombs??
Bath bombs are hard-packed mixture of dry ingredients, which effervesces when wet. They are used to add essential oils, scent and color to bathwater.
In water, the sodium bicarbonate in the bomb reacts with the citric acid to release carbon dioxide gas.
C5H7O5COOH + NaHCO3 → C5H7O5COO−Na+ + H2O + CO2
Here at AromatheraChi, we take bathtime seriously. Settling in for a good soak after a hard days work or even play is like taking a well deserved time out or an energetic pick me up for your aching muscles. Our bath bombs will turn your simple bath into a rejuvenating spa experience. The aromas and therapeutic properties of different essential oils are just endless.
Bath bombs are generally spherical but can be found or made in a variety of shapes, such as tablets or pressed into molds of your choice.
Our bath bombs contain:
What is a Shower Steamer??
Don’t have time for a luxurious bath, or dislike sitting in a bath, or just don’t have a bath tub? Consider using a shower steamer instead.
Shower steamers are my go to in the morning when I need a wake me up or in the evening, in a hot relaxing shower before bed.
Shower steamers are similar to bath bombs, except that they contain no moisturizing oils for the skin so that they don't make the floor of your shower slippery. Simply place a shower fizzy on the floor of your shower where the water will hit it, turn on the water, and step inside. The water will cause the shower fizzy to break apart and dissolve, thus releasing the fragrant essential oils.
Shower Steamers are great for sinus relief. If you purchase a shower steamer that contains eucalyptus oil, Ravintsara, Peppermint and menthol crystals you can use it to help clear out your sinuses when you have a cold.
Here are some of my favorite bath bomb and shower steamer blends:
There are so many blends to consider. Come and see all the different varieties we have to choose from at www.AromatheraChi.com. Please feel free to contact me at Andrea@AromatheraChi.com for a custom blend made just for you.
]]>Aromatherachi: Good morning Andrea! Thanks for joining us.
Andrea Giordano: Of course! I am excited for our conversation.
Aromatherachi: First off, tell us about your background.
Andrea Giordano: It started out when I got my degree in Ornamental Horticulture from SUNY [State University of New York] Farmingdale.
Aromatherachi: What certifications do you have?
Andrea Giordano: In addition to my Degree from SUNY Farmingdale, I am also certified by the Aromahead Institute. This organization certifies aromatherapists upon the completion of courses in the use of essential oils for therapeutic purposes. Finally, I am a Feng Shui Master. Feng Shui speaks about the 5 elements (water, earth, metal, fire, wood) and I believe that they can be used in conjunction with aromatherapy. Aromatherapy and essential oils can be an added tool when associated with the 5 elements, trying to overcome different situations! This relationship can help people work in different areas. For example, white sage (Salvia apiana) is used for space clearing. Instead of burning the herb and creating smoke, you could use a hydrosol and spray the aroma. Either produces the same outcome.
Aromatherachi: When did your interest in Aromatherapy begin?
Andrea Giordano: I’ve always had a lifetime interest in plants. That, combined with a devotion to natural and organic products, lead me to start Aromatherachi. As a girl, I gardened with mom. We grew so many things, including various herbs – basil, rosemary, thyme, chives. The smells of these plants spoke to me!
Aromatherachi: What are your three favorite Essential oils?
Andrea Giordano: I would have to say Orange-Sweet (Citrus sinensis), Vetiver (Vetiveria Zizanoides) and Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin). I feel they are a balanced mixture. These oils are grounding and happy. They balance my over-active mind!
Aromatherachi: Do you feel part of an overall aromatherapy community?
Andrea Giordano: Yes I certainly do! This is a very close knit community that shares easily.
Aromatherachi: Speak to me about your classes
Andrea Giordano: Teaching is a real passion of mine and I have been doing it for 3 years now. I teach because I love to see the expression on peoples faces when they mix their own blends. It is their own creation! They are learning about the oils from me, but it is their own blends. They create their own aromas. I think that is so exciting. There are endless blends and I love learning about ones I have never even imagined. So in that way, it really is an even exchange of learning. In my classes, we will make a number of things – shower fizzies, different saves through infused herbal oils, soaps, lip balms, body butter, green cleaning, lotions. I just love teaching. I love the repeat students because it is great watching their knowledge of the products created and involved grow!
Aromatherachi: What do you hope you can achieve through Aromatherachi?
Andrea Giordano: I hope to put my stamp on the world. I’ll be traveling soon to visit with distillers all over the world and will be bringing home their wonderful oils. I want to teach people that they do not need to use chemicals to feel beautiful or to heal certain things!

After the joy of the holidays are over, my mind & body needs some TLC.
Getting back into a routine of investing in care for you is very important. Let’s face it; if you don’t do it, who will? Taking care of yourself is not about being selfish—even though we may feel that way down deep—it’s about YOU and that’s a good thing.
One of my favorite things to start off the new year with is a walk in nature. It could be as simple as walking around the block. When you do this, “be present,” smell the air, notice what it smells like. What does the day look like? Are the birds out singing? Is there much traffic around?
“Be Present with Your Surroundings”
Here’s what my walk around the block felt like today. The day was partially cloudy with the smell of snow in the air—yes—us New Yorkers can smell snow! The sparrows were all around, the geese up in the sky flying in formation, the occasional dog walking their masters. I love looking at the winter landscapes of homes, how barren the shrubs look, yet the beauty they still hold.
When I come in from outside I usually head for the bath or shower, but before I wash I do something called Dry Brushing.
Dry brushing helps to:
Dry skin brushing stimulates your lymphatic system, aiding in detoxification. When your lymphatic system is not working properly, waste and toxins can build up and make you sick.
It's Invigorating to dry brush!
For the how to on “Dry Brushing”, click here.
Lastly, I like to have myself a cup of warm milk mixed with spices I purchased the last time I was in Sri Lanka, and then settle down in my comfy chair with my favorite book.
Spices used in Milk:
1 Tbs. Ceylon cinnamon
1 Tbs Cardamom
2 Tbs. Yellow king coconut Powder
1 Tbs. Black pepper
Directions:
Mix all spices together add 1/4 tsp. to milk, sweeten with Coconut palm sugar jaggery and add a tsp. of Ghee for an added pleasure to your taste buds.
]]>As the New Year is celebrated each year I think to myself, “This is the year to get organized”. Don’t get me wrong I’m a really organized person. Things are in their rightful place in my home, not much clutter (We’ll talk more on that subject soon enough); the organization I’m talking about is with my business. As this year comes to an end, I think of the year as a whole; how did I do, what did I do, how could it have been better?? These are all great questions to ask yourself if you have your own business or are thinking of starting your own business. The New Year is a great time to re-examine your business. Look for opportunities to grow and optimize your business.
Okay, I must confess I needed help. After 2-3 years of running my business, I started looking at where I was going, and what I really wanted. The one thing I knew is that I love AromatheraChi. I love what I do, teaching and seeing people’s faces in that AHA moment; real joy. After the battle in my brain settled, I got myself a Life Coach. THE BEST BUSINESS DECISION I MADE. I researched someone who is familiar with what my business is all about, that was very important to me, watched what that person did and how he interacted with people. It was a fit—I chose Benjamin Aaron from The Inspired Odyssey Coaching Program. It has only been two weeks, but I wanted to share some things I’ve learned:
1. Set Your Business Resolutions
It is beneficial to lay out what you want for your business in the coming 12 months. Be specific, and I mean down to seeing yourself actually doing what you want to accomplish, so, you can actually measure results and see whether you accomplished them by year’s end.Commit to a schedule. Planning ahead and committing to a schedule will help you focus.
2. Create an editorial calendar (reading time, Inspirational days).
Read industry blogs, books, magazines, and anything else you can get your hands on to be on top of the trends in your industry. I’m not going to write on a consistent basis if it’s not planned ahead of time (just me). However, if you plan ahead and put these days on your calendar, you will have accounted for them in your schedule.
3. Calendars help me stay organized by letting me know what I need to do & when.
Get key events (shows, classes) and the seasonal events on your calendar, making sure your brand stays relevant to your target customer is an important part of brand building. This is why you should take the time to map out key events and seasons where your brand can shine.
Now each year I strive to incorporate a new class (subject of learning) mostly to keep my studies new and up to date, but also for my own mind. I LOVE to learn new ways of doing things and techniques. This year it was the completion of my advanced class in distilling, what fun to be around creative like minds!!
Come and join me this spring for a Basic Distilling class to learn how to make your own aromatic waters.
Class schedules are on my web site www.AromatheraChi.com
